Something super cool is happening here at But Why?: I’m 75 followers shy of 1000.
1000? For real?!
When I nervously published my first post, I didn’t expect any views, let alone likes or comments. Now, to have connected with almost 1000 followers… It’s unbelievable. Everyone has helped me grow and learn so much since October 2015. To each and every one of you: thank you!
To celebrate this *almost* achievement, let’s connect on social media.
Let’s Connect
Quite often, I’ll stumble across a social media account run by a blogger whose posts I love. “How on earth,” I’ll think to myself, “did I miss this?” Unfortunately, the only way to find out if a blog has a social media presence is to visit it.And I follow a lot of blogs.
I’ve recently started sending messages to bloggers in an attempt to connect outside of WordPress. In a Twitter conversation with Paul from Comics and the Cross, I lamented the difficulty of this — these Tweets and Facebook messages sound spammy (“We follow each other on WordPress. Wanna follow each other on social media, too? Tee hee hee. 😛 “).
There had to be a better way.
Community Pool, unfortunately, wasn’t an option. The goal there is to improve your writing and blog formatting, not connect with followers. So despite my love for Mondays, C.P. wasn’t the tool I needed.
But wait — hang on; pause. If I want to connect with my blog’s followers, I should use my blog. (In retrospect: duh) Here’s my idea:
- Are we following each other on WordPress? If yes, I’d love to connect.
- Add me via my Facebook page or Twitter account.
- Shoot me a message saying you saw this post.
- When I see your note, I’ll follow back.
Alternatively, leave your Facebook and Twitter links in the comments below, and I’ll contact you.
Writing and blogging are tough enough without the added stress of publicizing our work — so let’s make it easy to support each other. That way, we can get back to what we love the most: the writing. 🙂
[Note: Please don’t get the wrong impression — I’m not begging for followers. Please don’t follow me on WordPress OR social media if you don’t feel that my work adds to your life in some way. My aim here is to thank my followers and create an easy way to connect for those who want to do so.]
Congrats! That’s quite an achievement!

I can only imagine. It’s been hard work just to get my current amount. But I hope to achieve that quantity some day.

I think I will do this too! This is a great idea and maybe we can create a place for people to share social media accounts, like a Facebook or Twitter page or something.

Hmm, that might be a good idea! I’ve seen groups on Goodreads create spaces to share social media handles.

It’s the only thing I can think of to try and share Social Media accounts. Unfortunately WordPress doesn’t really have anything that allows it beyond going to specific peoples blogs.

I know, it’s unfortunate They’re probably worried about spammers — and I can’t say I blame them. Seems like they have enough trouble with folks spamming in the community pool!

Yeah, I can imagine that there would be a lot of that.
That would be my concern about starting a Facebook or Twitter or even WordPress account specifically for sharing Social Media, that there would be A LOT of spammers taking advantage.

I’m also struggling a bit right now to decide which social media platforms to use….there are so many out there and I don’t want to get overwhelmed. I am already overwhelmed by the response on WordPress 🙂 I need a better way to organize my time.

I would recommend sticking to one or two that you really like, and not worrying about being on every single one. You’re right — it’s too overwhelming!

A great post Natalie. It really is humbling that people would actually want to read what we have written.
It is a really good point about messages that do sound like spam. I don’t promote the other social media through messages for that reason.
I am now following you on Twitter. My twitter link is https://twitter.com/canuckcarl
Congratulations on your new soon to be milestone. You are a very interactive blogger (which is wonderful). Takes a lot of work reading and commenting on others blogs, but it really does help grow.
Almost 1,000 followers, but you have worked for it and deserve this milestone! 🙂

Natalie, Congrats on approaching 1000 followers! I can’t even imagine having that many people reading my thoughts and ideas since I am fairly new at this and still trying to find my footing in the world of blogging. I don’t particularly like those who are out there practically begging for people to check out their blog and comment on it. I had one fellow blogger at the Community Pool almost get offended because I had visited her blog and let her know at the C.P. that I had done so, but she wanted me to comment on her blog directly. I may see things a little different here since I am new to this, but I try to keep my blog and my social media accounts like Facebook separate. I feel like I can be more honest with complete strangers in the blog world than I can with my “friends” on FB who may get easily offended by my thoughts and opinions. As I grow in my blog, I may change how I look at this!

Fair enough! It’s good that you didn’t start social media accounts just because many other bloggers do — it’s important to do what’s right for YOU. So rock on 🙂 I created a Facebook page (different from a profile) to create a web presence — which is something that agents look for. Since I’m trying to publish a book, it’s super important for me to have one!
If you do change your mind, be sure to let me know! Thanks for stopping by 🙂

Thanks! 🙂 The best tip I can give is to post regularly (for some, that might be once a week, or every other week, or whatever works for you). Regular posting keeps readers coming back. Tools like Community Pool are super helpful as well for connecting with others 🙂
